About Writing

Well, it's been a week since I implemented the mandatory 500 words-per-day or 3500 words-per-week rule. Whew. I have to say, I'm amazed at what happened. Instead of struggling to meet the minimum, I surpassed it by leaps and bounds.

This is what last week resulted in:

Monday: 2,166
Tuesday: 1,573
Wednesday: 756
Thursday: 520
Friday: 2,450

It doesn't take a genius to see that I basically doubled my minimum word count without even writing on Sunday or Saturday. I was amazed. As for Wednesday and Thursday? Both those days I struggled. I didn't want to write. I wasn't in the mood, but I refused to let my mood decide my writing. And yes, I could have actually stopped writing after Tuesday since I'd already reached the weekly minimum, but that kind of start-and-stop writing was what instigated the idea of a daily word count in the first place. I wanted to be more consistent. Better able to keep the story flow in my mind without having to re-read what I'd already written.

So far this week, the results have been good, but not nearly as productive as last week. I didn't write at all on Saturday or Sunday -- there were too many interruptions and disruptions with my kids and hubby -- but I did manage (with a great deal of griping and groaning) to get @475 words written on Monday. I can't give an exact count because it involved rewriting. I'm just thrilled that I managed to force myself to write! On Tuesday, I was again unmotivated, but once I switched scenes I was working on, I was able to get 789 words done. On Wednesday, I pushed out 769, and 1,279 on Thursday.

Now that I'm re-establishing the habit of writing nearly every day (with the exception of weekends), I'm considering upping the minimum. After all, with the exception of last Thursday and this Monday, my word count has been 750 or higher. Rather than set an unrealistic goal and discourage myself before I start, I'm planning to increase the daily count to 750 a day or 5,250 per week. It's only slightly higher than my current goal and, based on what I see from last week and this one, attainable.

I'll let you know how that fares.
